Harmony in the workplace
All of us have had bosses who mistreated us. We dreaded going to work and looked forward to the weekend. We put in the hours and did our job, yet he or she constantly criticized our work. Our boss was not someone we would invite to our home. If we saw them on the sidewalk, we changed directions. We prayed for them to be fired. They ruled with fear, believing it was best for the bottom line. If you are this kind of supervisor, there is a better way and I believe you will see the results in your employees and eventually the revenue for your business.
Treat them the way you would like to be treated
Put yourself in the employees’ place. How would you like to be treated? How would you like to survive on what you pay your employees? Of course, each business comprises profit and loss. You must make a profit. However, if it is on the backs of the people who work for you, you will lose. If your business is in trouble, be honest and ask your employees for suggestions. And when you receive these suggestions, don’t discount them. Many times, the person who works on the factory floor is more knowable than the CEO. They know where customer service can be improved. Or money is being wasted. Factories close and businesses shut their doors because the owners only look at what they are making and how to make more.
see your employees as individuals
Each person is different. What motivates one will not work for all. Taylor your incentives for the individual. It is easy for us to lump people together. If one messes up to punish the entire department. If you have one employee who is not doing their assigned task and others who are working diligently, do you reward the ones who are faithful?
Thank them
Many employees feel unappreciated in their work. The result is low morale and a lack of interest in their jobs. If you’re looking only at the bottom line, you will find an employee who feels appreciated works more efficiently. An employee who is happy in the workplace will stay longer, thus driving down the cost of recruiting.
Compliment them
How about an employee of the month? An employee of the year? How about complimenting them for their hard work? Money rewards. If your employees feel appreciated and they earn rewards for doing a good job, they feel a part of the business and will work harder and be more loyal.
Be humble
Remember when you were just starting out? Before you had others working for you. It is said in years past owners of corporations who made the best CEOs were the ones who started in the mailroom or worked as janitors. They worked in the lowest-paying jobs so they could identify with their employees. If you set in an ivory tower, you will never know when it is crumbling.

Points to ponder
How can you improve your relationship with your employees? Would you like to have yourself as your boss?
If not, why not? Do you see things from your employees’ point of view? List what you have to change to be a better employer. Be honest. You will see the results later.
